MAMI on a Mission Podcast: Faith, Healing & Purpose
Break Free from False Labels and Embrace Your True Identity
Ever feel like your identity lives under a pile of titles, expectations, and old wounds? We go straight at the lie that your past or your job defines you and replace it with a freeing truth: your worth is already declared by God. Through personal stories, scripture, and hard-won lessons, we unpack how false labels form, why they stick, and what it looks like to live as God’s masterpiece rather than a sum of mistakes or achievements.
We talk candidly about intimidation and shrinking in certain rooms, the tug of people-pleasing, and the subtle ways success or struggle can become a mask. Then we map out a better way: anchoring identity in Christ, practicing daily renewal, and choosing assignments over accolades. You’ll hear Ephesians 2:10 and 1 Peter 2:9 come alive in practical steps—truth declarations to counter lies, rhythms that move you from empty to overflow, and a mindset shift from image to impact. The result is quiet confidence—what we call God-fidence—so you lead, serve, and love with clarity.
We also share how service can outshine status, why turning down more money can be an act of alignment, and how community, Bible study, and recovery tools accelerate healing. If you’re ready to stop negotiating your worth and start walking in purpose, this conversation offers the language, the scriptures, and the encouragement to begin. Subscribe for more faith-centered growth, share this with an amiga who needs the reminder, and leave a review to help this message reach women hungry for hope and healing.

In a world that constantly tells us who we should be based on our past or our appearance, our mistakes or our roles, it's easy to forget who we truly are. But the truth is your identity isn't rooted in what you've done. It's rooted in Christ. In today's episode, we're letting go of false labels and lies and learning to embrace our true worth, purpose, and identity as daughters of the King. Hello, everybody. This is Mariana, the host of the Mommy on a Mission podcast, and also the bestseller of Mommy on a Mission, a guide towards healing, self-discovery, and walking in confidence. When asked, tell me a little bit about yourself, whether it's at a job interview, an icebreaker, or even a casual conversation, I know for myself it was always tied to a title like wife, mom, career woman. It was always about what I did, not about who I was. And I never used to say things like I'm passionate about helping others, or I love reading a good book with a cup of coffee, or I feel closest to God when I'm outdoors. And sometimes the labels I gave myself weren't even positive. They were tied to mistakes, to pain, to what others said I was. Words like liar, bitter, or unhappy. Maybe in certain seasons, those things were true of how I acted or felt, but that wasn't who I was at my core. I mean, we often mistake labels for identity. But your job, your title, your past, none of those define you. They describe seasons, not your soul. So I'd like to ask, what labels have you been carrying that no longer reflect who you are or who God says you are? You know, it took me years and a lot of God's patience to unlearn the lies I believe about myself. Reading his word and studying through Bible teachers like Beth Moore, Max Lacato, and Joyce Meyer, along with Celebrate Recovery, which is a Christian recovery group, it helped me slowly shift how I saw myself. Because for years I believed I was unworthy because I spent my life seeking approval from people who couldn't give it. My parents, my ex-spouses. Yeah, they expressed love, but they also expressed it through control, criticism, or absence. And those wounds made me believe I didn't deserve anything good. Even later in professional settings, I'd shrink when someone intimidated me or when I felt overlooked. Those old triggers still echoed. And I know I'm not alone in this because I've heard many, many people, and I've even seen and witnessed so many people who will shrink themselves or who will sit in the back. Like, are you one of those people that would sit in the back just so that you wouldn't get called on? And if you know anything about that, it's the person who sits in the back who gets called on the most because the teacher or whomever already knows the reason why you're sitting in the back, right? And I'm not gonna lie to you, there are times still, and and this isn't about race or anything, but because of how I grew up, I would lie to you if I told you that being around Caucasian people, Caucasian women would intimidate me. I don't know. It's it's like society in its own way, or even in the upbringing, felt as if they were superior than me. And anytime I've been in jobs where a Caucasian woman was my boss, I would always feel like I was dumb or I wasn't smart enough, or or I just felt intimidated. That you know, the the CEO of this nonprofit was a white woman, and she was younger than me, but and then her assistant or her program director or her assistant, I think she was like the assistant. Now she's I think a program director of that particular program. But I mean, nonprofit, and for some reason, it's like I felt like I needed to shrink, and all of a sudden I had like brain farts and I would feel dumb, or I felt like I wasn't educated enough, or that I couldn't even speak right. I don't know, but for whatever reason, it still triggered something in me that I felt like my voice wasn't gonna be heard, or that it was overlooked, or that I was overlooked, or or whatever. How many of you have felt that way? Because I know that I have. As a Hispanic woman, I know that I have. Because anytime I've worked for Hispanic women who were in leadership, or even black women who were in leadership, I never felt like I had to shrink myself. I always felt like I could contribute and that I was seen and that I was heard. And replacing lies with truth wasn't easy, like it was hard for me. It's like trying to lose 50 pounds that took years to put on. Like, who feels me on that one? Because that's what I'm struggling with right now. We know that it takes time, right? Consistency and grace, because we have to give ourselves. But the more I read God's word, the more I began to understand that my worth was never meant to be determined by people, it was determined by him. And I have to constantly remind myself of that, even like three years ago. Ephesians 2 10 says, For we are God's masterpiece created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which he prepared in advance for us to do. You are not a mistake, neither was I. You are a masterpiece. And so, Amiga, have you ever had a job where someone treated you differently because of the title they held? Or maybe you know someone who only identifies with their success or their failures. And if we're being honest, I've been there too. There were seasons when I would boast about accomplishments to feel validated. Other times I would share my hardships for empathy, using my pain as an introduction. Neither one was my true identity. Those were just moments in my story. I've learned that I'm not motivated by titles or money. I'm not. I've always said that like titles don't impress me. I don't care how much money you have, that doesn't impress me either. Like, that doesn't motivate me. That's not like my motivating factor. Like I remember I had left a job and they wanted to keep me. And so they were, they offered me more money. And I said no, and they offered me more money again. And the thing about it is, is that it wasn't about the money that I was chasing after. It was actually that I wanted to know how do I do my job and incorporate God in my job even when I can't publicly do that. But I've had people who, because of their title, they would act a certain way. And I mean, some of them would be really, really mean. Like they were really motivated by their title. Like you couldn't say, oh, she's just a supervisor. Oh, no, no, no. I am the manager of such and such department or whatever. Or even if they had more money, because I've been to places, and I know many of you have that anytime you go anywhere, like let's say a really nice restaurant, and you know people have money in there, right? And you walk in, and I mean, they don't know if you have money or not just by by the way that you're dressed, because you could be dressed very, very dressed down and still have money, right? But they don't know that. But because of who they are, they will turn their nose up at people or will would, you know, look down at you and making an assumption about who they think you are. But as for me, I'm motivated by service, by seeing people thrive. I'm fueled by impact, not by image. And that's because my identity has always been rooted in Christ, even when I didn't recognize it. Something that I read was in 1 Peter 2 9, and it reminds us that you are chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declore, declore, I'm sorry, declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. And when we root ourselves in that truth, we stop measuring ourselves by worldly standards and start living with divine identity. Your worth is not up for negotiation, it's already been declared. Man, isn't that something? Like there is no price that someone could offer, right, that's going to determine who you are. Because God already has placed that you are invaluable, that you there is no price to you. Your worth is not up for negotiation. Like it's like that job. Like, no matter how much money you gave me, it wasn't gonna change who I was, and it wasn't gonna change what I was looking for. And if we're gonna be real, that job I actually turned down and they were offering me really good money, and I actually accepted a job that paid me less. But in those five years of me being with that organization that I took, that I accepted, I learned so much about who I was. And I learned so much about forgiveness and how to work with individuals who were going through some things, probably even similar to me. And some were even worse. I mean, I worked with ex-offenders, recovering drug addicts. I worked with women coming off of prostitution who wanted a different life. I worked with individuals who did live their life through the titles of their job, and when they lost their job, they didn't even know who they were anymore. And it's because of that that I knew that mommy on a mission was something that God had called me to do. Mujeres alcanzando metas impossibles because for so many years, or for so long, we have been holding on to something that doesn't even belong to us, that's not even part of our of who we are anymore. We have evolved, we have changed, but yet we don't know how to truly navigate out of it. And we still allow ourselves to be triggered by behavior, by actions from other people, or by what they may be able to offer us. And the truth of the matter is that there's nothing more that I would want then to be identified as the daughter of the king. So, what does it look like to live from your identity in Christ? For me, it looks like peace when chaos surrounds me. I just living in that peace. It looks like confidence when others doubt you. It looks like purpose when the world says you're behind. When you walk in who God says you are, you're you stop seeking approval and you start walking in authority. You start serving from overflow instead of running on empty. And again, that's what we're all about. It's about stop running or operating from empty and start serving and working from overflow. We cannot run on an empty gas tank. We can't, and so what that does is that it causes us to stop comparing and start celebrating because again, the truth is when you know who you are, you live differently. I know I do. I know that my life is completely different than what it was 10 years ago, it's completely different than what it was 20 years ago. You look differently, you live differently, you love differently, and you lead differently. And that's what I pray this episode sparks in you. A reminder that your identity is not found in perfection, but in position. You are a daughter of the king. And what that means, it means that you already belong. I mean, this conversation wasn't just about peeling off old labels, it's about walking boldly in the name God has already spoken over you. When you know who you are in Christ, you stop striving for validation and start standing in confidence, or what I like to call confidence. Because when you can't, he can. You stop settling for what the world says you deserve and start claiming what God already promised. I mean, like he's already, it's already there. It's already there. We may not see it, we may not feel it, we may not know, but it's already there because God's not going to ask you to do something and not provide you the provision, not give you the provision in order to carry it out. He's already got it taken care of. And maybe you've been carrying false identities, unworthy, overlooked, broken. But today, I want you to speak truth over yourself. I want you to repeat after me. I want you to say this to yourself. Maybe write it down, put it on a sticky note, put it on your mirror, whatever. But I but I want you to remember I am chosen, I am redeemed, I am loved, I am his masterpiece. And that's what Empower Her is all about.
